journalism

I’m a journalist and trainer for CBC News, where I’ve worked for more than 20 years on radio, TV and online.

I love making sense of things. My specialty is science and climate stories, and I’m especially interested in intersections — not just the data we have about our changing world, but how that shifts our lives and what we do about it.

These days my work is often behind the scenes as a senior editor and producer at the national digital desk, and trainer for CBC journalists across the country. I co-created our climate reporting course, and also teach about using AI responsibly in the newsroom.

Much of my career for CBC has been in Vancouver; I now live near Nelson, B.C., with my husband and two daughters.

Reporting from the TED Talks in Vancouver in 2017 while a Boston Dynamics robot performed.

a few highlights

I’ve reported on all sorts of things — elections, fighting octopuses, earthquakes, kidnappings, investigations, a riot, kelp, orcas, nuclear power, plastic bags, sea lions and so many salmon stories.

Some favourite projects meant space to get curious and dig in:

Keep Calm: I realized I’m bad at calming down so I pitched a radio show about it, exploring how to do it (hint: being told to relax doesn’t work) and the products and techiques we’re being sold to help. The hour-long national radio special, co-produced by Manusha Janakiram, won a prestigious Gracie Award.

What on Earth: I helped pitch and launch CBC Radio’s climate solutions show back in 2020, and was part of the team that won the inaugural Canadian Journalism Foundation award for Climate Solutions Reporting in 2021.

Isn’t it nice to sit around a fire? I think so. If you find yourself around one with me, be warned, I might tell you about the origins of roasting marshmallows.

backstory

Before I became a storyteller, I thought I was going to be a scientist. I graduated from UBC with an Honours Degree in Biology after pipetting stickleback DNA, counting kelp, and watching fish mating dances.

I returned to UBC for my Masters in Journalism, focusing on science and risk communications.

My last study species: Pundamilia nyererei.
